THINKING ABOUT REHOMING YOUR PET?
Rehoming a pet can be a difficult decision. Before making that decision, consider whether the challenge you are facing may have another solution, such as temporary help with pet food, supplies, veterinary care, housing, or behavior concerns.
IF REHOMING IS NECESSARY
If you can no longer safely or responsibly care for your pet, take time to find a safe and appropriate new home.
Consider these safety steps:
- • Ask potential adopters about their household, other pets, and experience caring for animals.
• Ask where and how your pet will be kept.
• Be honest about your pet’s age, personality, behavior, health, and medical needs.
• Request a veterinary reference when appropriate.
• Provide veterinary records and other important information to the new caregiver.
• If your pet is microchipped, contact the microchip company to update the ownership/contact information when the pet is rehomed. Until the registration is updated, the pet may still be traced back to you if the animal is lost, found, or taken to a shelter or veterinary clinic.
• Consider contacting a reputable shelter, animal rescue organization, or established rehoming service for guidance.
• Be cautious of anyone who refuses to answer reasonable questions about themselves or the home they are offering.
• Never knowingly place an animal in a situation where they may be used for fighting, breeding, abuse, neglect, or other harmful purposes.
A quick handoff is not always a safe rehoming. Taking time to ask questions can help protect your pet and give them the best chance at a safe, appropriate new home.
